Brexit Update: UK Parliament Says: No, No, No, and More No

 In Brexit

There was a lot of voting again in London yesterday. And this time it was different, at least in one respect. There was no voting on anything May put forward, but on alternative Brexit options that MPs put forward. Speaker John Bercrow had selected 8 options out of a total of 15.

No, No, No, No

All proposals were rejected. Among the eight that were voted on were proposals for a new referendum, a soft Brexit, a Norway solution, and a Customs Union. The one that was closest in getting approved was the one for “a permanent and comprehensive UK-wide customs union with the EY”. It was voted down by 272 to 264. Another close one was a proposal to require a referendum for any deal that is approved.

The Guardian describes the various options in this article.

May Stepping Down if Deal is Approved

According to the BBC at least 25 conservatives that have voted against May’s deal will change their vote from NO to YES and approve the deal if May steps down after her deal is approved. Among those are Boris JohnsonandJacob Rees-Mogg.

The New York Times quotes May:

“I have heard very clearly the mood of the parliamentary party,” Mrs. May told Conservative lawmakers gathered in a meeting room in Parliament. “I know there is a desire for a new approach, and new leadership, in the second phase of the Brexit negotiations, and I won’t stand in the way of that.”

Politico on the same subject:

The announcement is a last throw of the dice from the embattled Tory leader, designed to tempt recalcitrant Euroskeptic backbenchers to support her deal by holding out the prospect of a more hard-line Brexiteer taking control for the second phase of the negotiations when Britain’s future relationship with the EU will be settled.
